Flip House Friday: Kitchen Plans & Paint!

So this was my office yesterday along with one of my more lazy co-workers… no complaints here!  I’m working on the kitchen cabinet doors for the skinny house – more on that below!

But we have paint! Paint is really the first thing that goes in where you start to see that shift from demolition and tearing down to building back up. It cleans everything up and starts pushing the house in my style direction. I chose Sherwin Williams Olympus White, which is a very pale gray. Now we can move on to floors!

The kitchen plans are also moving along. Depending on which way you look at it, we lucked out and are able to keep the kitchen cabinets. The truth is, there are a lot to replace, and the cabinets themselves are in good condition. So I am embracing the oak! It doesn’t hurt that oak cabinets have been coming back around anyway. 😉

Here is a some good inspiration. I love the medium oak tones and the dark hardware mixed with the whites and grays.

My cabinets are more of an orange oak. And although the cabinets themselves are in pretty darn good shape, the finish could use a little polish. So I’ve decided to wax them with Briwax in Tudor Brown. I’ve never waxed before, and the process is not difficult, just a little tedious in the corners, where I’m being careful to not give it a glazed and distressed look. The wax has given a whole new life to the cabinet faces, adding a nice smooth finish. It’s also toning down the orange and highlighting the wood grain. Here are a couple of comparison pics so you can get an idea.

To open up the room a bit and actually let the window breathe, we moved the wall cabinet from the right of the window to the left the side to replace the slightly wider cabinet that was on the left. This lets in more light and removes some of the visual onslaught of wood. I thought about removing all of the wall cabinets on that side, but I was worried about the window looking too tiny and alone on that big wall, and we didn’t want to take out too much cabinet space.

Lastly on the cabinet front, I am going to plank the side and back of the peninsula, which will further reduce the onslaught of wood you can see when you walk into the kitchen.

I’m pairing plain white countertops  and black cup pulls with the oak cabinets for a timeless look. For the backsplash, I’ve picked a slightly larger subway tile (4×8)… classic but with a little different edge. A contrasting gray grout will give the design some definition. I’m still toying with adding a patterned tile above the range.

Even though I’m taking away wood in some places, I’m adding it in others to tie back into the cabinets. I’m loving the pendant below for above the sink, and am also thinking about something like the x fixture below in the adjacent dining area.
