Favorite Green(ish) Cabinets

So, I’m on the way to painting my kitchen island. This has been in the back of my mind for a couple of years, honestly. Even though our house was new when we moved in, the back of the island was quickly scarred by kicking legs and spilled juice. It’s quite scuffed up, and I knew that once that kids weren’t quite so “spilly”, I could repaint it to make it to cover the all the marks I couldn’t get off.

Well, I think I’m at that point. And of course now, 6 years later, I want to do something a little more fun that just a new coat of white. After all, I’d like something slightly darker to hide some of the mess. And the fronts on my island are pretty beat up. They could use a nice coat of paint too. I’ve been toying with a slate blue, but now I’m leaning towards green.

Against the wishes of my husband, I’ve picked a color. Now, I should say, that when we were building our house, my husband really didn’t care much about appearance. He was concerned with function. So colors and materials and decorating have generally fallen to me. He’s usually supportive, and it’s gotten to the point where I really don’t run much by him in this department. I’ll even make a sport of it and see how long it takes him to notice something.

But because I’m looking for new barstools, I knew I had to get his opinion, because he would have to fully approve of their comfort. This of course led us to the island color, and I told him I was painting it green. He winced. Visibly winced. I was surprised, for he usually doesn’t care. And then he tells me, “I haven’t been a fan of some of the recent changes you’ve made.” Well this was news to me! I asked for an example, and he told me the new kitchen knobs. Ok, fine, I can see that. They have been up since I did a little kitchen refresh last winter. But it was a small and easily reversible change, so I wasn’t too phased. I pressed him for more, and he said the dining room curtains. The curtains that have been hanging there for FIVE YEARS! The curtains which were one of the very first decorating projects I did in the house. I couldn’t help but laugh. Oh honey. So I’m not sure whether that means he just doesn’t like the curtains or doesn’t like basically everything I’ve done in the house?!

So for the record, he is not a fan of me painting the island. And for the record, I was a little nervous about the new color. So now I’m really freaked out that this thing has to look good. He seized on my doubts, and now I’m second guessing everything! Granted, I have a feeling that even if he hates it, he won’t tell me. Unless I say I hate it first. Then he’ll be more than happy to spill. (This exact scenario happened with a recent haircut).

Anyways, back to green. In my pursuit of a color, I came across so many gorgeous kitchens, I couldn’t help but share!

Sherwin Williams Pewter Green

So this color that Emily Henderson used in this Portland kitchen is just beautiful! Unfortunately, I’m afraid it’s too dark for my kitchen given my black granite countertops, but it’s still fun to swoon over! I love the clean crown molding on these cabinets combined with the brass hardware.

Benjamin Moore Dark Pewter

This color is too pretty to hide away in a closet. Check out Studio McGee’s pretty green cabinets sporting Dark Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

Sherwin Williams Retreat

So as it turns out, Retreat is just one color lighter than Pewter Green. Of course, all of these kitchens have light counters, unlike my black granite. The bench legs and lanterns really pop against this grayish green backdrop.

deVOL

I must confess, I have no idea what this color is! It’s from English cabinet company deVOL. The green on the bottom with the brass, combined with all white up top is so clean and pretty.

Dunn Edwards Black Spruce

This kitchen from Studio McGee sports a color very similar to Emily Henderson’s Portland Kitchen. I love the floors and stool seats together with the cabinet hardware and lights against this rich green.

Sherwin Williams Clary Sage

This color took some digging to find, but it was worth it. I just can’t resist that cabinet color with the brass hardware. The whole kitchen is worth a look.

Benjamin Moore Tarrytown Green

Farrow & Ball Pigeon

This light green is so neutral and pairs perfectly with the light counters and chrome hardware.

Sherwin Williams Hunt Club Green

When the color isn’t the focal point

Sadly, I can’t find the color on this one. This green color makes a statement in this kitchen, and yet it still takes a back seat to that range! I love the latches and range with this deep green.

Benjamin Moore Jack Pine

This kitchen… there are so many things I love about this kitchen I’m including an extra pic. But definitely check out the full gallery for your own viewing pleasure. One of my favorite things just may be those little feet on the cabinets.

Walk Away

The hardest part of this post was calling it quits. But the color I ultimately picked is in this list. I wouldn’t say it was my favorite of the bunch, but it was the one I thought I could pull in to my existing kitchen the easiest. My drawer fronts are still with the painter, and once they are done, I will paint the sides and back of my island myself. I can’t wait to see how they look. Fingers crossed my husband doesn’t wince when he sees them!
