Wooden Chevron Picture Frame

If you hang with me here, you may start to see a trend with what I’ve been into lately. Lots of cut, geometric, puzzle piece wood projects. Oh and picture frames. I’ve been trying to hang up more pictures around the house. So this project is the best of both worlds 🙂

With the exception of the plywood backing, it’s made entirely of 1×2 furring strips, which are only about $1 for an 8′ length. Although they require a little extra sanding, I actually like them for this project since they have slightly rounded edges and a little more “character”. And usually, one side is rougher than the other, so I just face that side down.

The plywood is 3′ x ~12 1/2″. To begin, I sketched out vertical lines on the plywood at 6″, 18″, and 30″. These lines correspond to the 3 vertical borders in the pattern.  Similar to the way I created the Geometric Wooden Art, I created a basic frame out of 1×2 and laid the plywood inside.  This helped me hold the pieces in place as I cut and laid them down.

Note: All angles cuts are at 45 degrees.

The very first piece is a right triangle at 2″ x 2″. I then cut the next piece with nonparallel ends  and the short side the same length as the angled side on the first triangle. Continue cutting the 1x2s until you get to the bottom, then work your way back up again in the 2nd section, then down in the 3rd section, and then back up for the 4th section.

After you fill in the frame, do yourself a favor and label the pieces. Trust me, this will save you a lot of frustration at the end! I just numbered mine beginning in the upper left corner and ending in the upper right corner. I also labeled them with whether they should be stained or painted.

After some sanding, I used slightly watered down white paint to do a bit of a whitewash over the white boards. I stained the other pieces and the frame in Minwax Puritan Pine.

To assemble, I laid all of the pieces back in the frame again, then began gluing them down with Gorilla Glue one at a time. It goes quickly. After the pieces were in, I lifted the frame, added a line of gorilla glue around the inside of the frame, and put it back in place, securing it with brad nails into both the chevron pieces and the plywood.

The frames are the most basic frames you can imagine! I used two 5×7 frames along with 1 8×10. They also come in white if you would prefer white. I just used a screw to hang them. The frames are super lightweight, and I really liked using them. They load from the front, and the frame pops on and off easily.

That’s it! I love the coastal and natural vibe they give, perfect for our beach pictures. 🙂
