It’s been almost 2 years since we broke ground on our “pool house”, and a year and a half since we “moved in“, but we’ve finally reached that point where I feel like it’s come together.

I apparently wasn’t good at taking any before pics, so I’ll throw it back to 2015 for this “before”.

and then a “during”…

And finally, now…

I use the term house liberally as it’s not a house at all. It might look like a small one from the outside, but inside it houses my (very messy and sawdusty) workshop and our lawn mower along with landscaping and pool supplies. Upstairs I have my staging inventory. But the best part is the shade it provides by the pool. It brings life to this spot. What was once a sun-drenched slab of concrete now has definition and comfort.

We’ve found we love to sit out here even when we aren’t swimming. We have our screened porch, but this offers a new spot with new views and a different feel.

Sitting Area

On one wall is the small kitchen area I built. It provides counter space for snacks and serving, storage for things like paper towels and cups, and, most importantly, a small fridge. I love its cute retro styling.

I had once envisioned the seating area with comfy seating… basically an outdoor living room. BUT practicality prevailed and we opted for Polywood adirondack chairs and foot stools. They are a classic style but perfect to pair with the wet suits and towels.

There is a lot of black and white (like this rug), in the area… kind of not intentionally. But that’s one of the reasons I love the wood tone and airiness of this waterfall bench.

Planters

To bring a bit more cohesion to the space, instead of mismatched and cracked planters, I made this planter jacket and trellis. It also coordinates with the planter I made last year.

Our latest addition

The day after the 4th, I was totally exhausted, but so excited to just sit out by the pool, read a book, and not have to even think about going inside. I had cool drinks and snacks in the fridge and a book in my hand.

And, I was out there for hours because of our latest addition, the loo. We’d wanted an outdoor bathroom since we put in the pool, and our ideas morphed over time. But once our pool area was done, we were really ready to get something set up. After years of thinking and planning, we had an aha moment and changed course. This was up 2 weeks later!

It provides us with a place to change, use the facilities, and wash our hands. Now we just need to help the grass in this area as it took quite a beating while I was building!

I’m excited to share with you the details behind these projects! Stay tuned!
