Black, White & Gold Kitchen Refresh

I recently did a good, deep cleaning of my kitchen, including rearranging some of my drawers and where things go. My husband swears I do this so he can never find things, but… oh wait, that is part of the fun 🙂

Anyway, my kitchen was feeling good again. My plastic containers had lids, bags of flour didn’t fall on me when I opened my baking cabinet, and lo and behold I could find the exact spice I needed. But as I looked around at one of the most used rooms of the house, I realized it needed some love. The last decorating decision I made in there were pretty much the cabinet hardware when we were building the house. A few little things pop up here and there like my Thomstead Dairy sign (after the name of the dairy farm I grew up on), and my plate rack, but even that was still sporting my fall vinyl decals.

Here are the before pics…

And so I came up with a few quick ways to perk it up in there. And I do mean quick… I’ve got a pile of flip house projects stacking up, and I’ll be staging that baby before I know it. Plus, I really want to put the yucky weather to good use and continue on my house purge. So these are quick (and quite reversible!)

1. Shelves: I’ve always planned to have small shelves flanking my window, but I just never got around to it. But I really wanted a good place to put a few of my vases and antique jars. Plus, I don’t want them sitting on my windowsill anymore. I like it when the sill is clean because it feels better and I can open the window without moving stuff. Oh, and it doesn’t block my view of the sheep – I love watching them jump and play!

2. Dress up my window with a new pendant. It used to be just a recessed light, so this gives instant impact.

3. Hello, maybe a window treatment? On a recent Ikea trip, I saw this fabric and thought it would be the perfect pop. For less than $10 I have a new treatment.

4. Backsplash: confession time… I almost instantly regretted my backsplash after it was installed. Not the whole thing… I love the black pencil liner… but I just don’t dig the part above the cooktop. Wow… I feel so much better getting that off my back! So moving on, I really can’t justify ripping that baby out, especially since it’s just the one part. Combine that with the fact that I’m still really digging patterned tile, and I knew I had to do something. My new Cricut Maker really helped out there!

5. In the same vein of wanting to bring in some trends without having to go crazy in the commitment category, I decided to change up my cabinet hardware… but just on top. Because I kinda like the mixed finish look. And because replacing all those cup pulls could get crazy! Not that I’m totally counting that possibility out 😉

6. A few little pops of fun, like the sign I made, My Cup Runneth Over. I’ve wanted to have that phrase in my kitchen for years! The shelves also helped me to display a few of my favorite things, like vintage glass bottles from my grandmother, along with some new pieces like the chopping board I decked out with a little paint.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my little kitchen refresh tour. I know it has needed it for quite some time. Check back soon as I’ll be sharing little details behind the projects! Thanks for stopping by!

    • Hi Evie,
I used my cricut to cut vinyl and overlaid it onto the tile. Previously it was just plain subway tile. I'll be doing a post soon on this project!
